JOHNNO’S PLEA TO YOUNG GUNS

ABOVE: Armitage
4th November 2009

By Pete Samson

MARTIN JOHNSON has challenged England’s new kids to seize the opportunity presented by his team’s injury jinx.

The England boss will today name his starting line-up to face Australia on Saturday after delaying the announcement by 24 hours to assess the fall-out from another bruising Premiership weekend.

Johnson has lost 12 first-choice players with injury but said there will be no excuses.

“Injuries always gives other players an opportunity,” he said. “Would they have got it otherwise? Who can tell?

“Delon Armitage last year was a classic example. He got his opportunity through injury after he’d been injured himself.

“As coaches, we want continuity as much as we can get it within the group but there will always be changes.

“Hopefully these injuries are exceptional but we are just getting ready to play. We are not talking about excuses, we are talking about producing performances.”

Uncapped Northampton youngster Courtney Lawes is set to take his place on the bench after Johnson released 10 squad players back to their clubs yesterday.

Johnson said: “Courtney is a tremendous athlete. He’s still a very young guy but he has impressed.”
