SAINSBURY'S has hit on a popular choice in David Tyler, who is set to become the supermarket’s next chairman.


Currently chairman of Logica, he is a former finance director of Great Universal Stores.


His career has also included stints at Unilever and auctioneer Christie’s.


Yell chairman Bob Wigley recently described him as “a thinking man’s finance director... and a very nice bloke”.


The ability of part-time directors to improve companies’ fortunes will be acknowledged in the fourth annual Non-Executive Director Awards, sponsored by KBC Peel Hunt.


Previous winners include Sir John Parker, chairman of Anglo American, and Sir Philip Hampton, outgoing chairman of Sainsbury’s.


KNIGHT Vinke, the US activist investor, has beefed up its management.


Appointed as managing directors are investment banking veteran James Knowles and David Trenchard, from City financial PR firm Tulchan.


Raymond Miquel is stepping down as chairman and chief executive of Scottish biscuit maker Lees Foods, 16 years after he rescued the company when it was facing bankruptcy.
