BLACK DAY FOR BROWN

TODAY is judgment day for Gordon Brown – and he knows it.

After weeks of plotting the Prime Minister’s downfall, his enemies are poised to deliver the fatal blow.

Labour’s dreadful result in the European elections – coming after their thumping in the local polls last week – was simply the last straw for many in the party.

They believe Brown has now lost all credibility with the British people and Labour stands no chance of beating David Cameron with him still at the helm.

So far, the plot has been carefully conducted by a group of fuming backbenchers behind closed doors to avoid outright mutiny.

Cabinet rebels tried to prise Brown out last week with a flurry of resig­nations aimed at sparking a leadership contest.

That failed.

Today, those backbench plotters must reveal themselves if they want any hope of getting the stubborn PM out of Downing Street.

They need 72 signatures to force the defiant PM to fight a leadership contest.

Brown would struggle to survive such a devastating move against his authority.

For the sake of the country, this farce needs to end now.
