A QUARTER OF BRITS DREAM OF OLYMPIC GOLD

ABOVE: Jordan shows off her dressage skills
28th October 2008

By Emily Garnham for dailystar.co.uk

IT SEEMS horse-mad Katie Price isn’t the only Brit harbouring big sporting ambitions.

After wowing the crowds at the Horse of the Year Show, the glamour girl hinted she would enter the London Olympics.

But she’s not alone.

Team GB’s medal haul in Beijing has spawned a nation of wannabe Olympians with new research showing that more than a quarter of us want to compete in 2012.

Rather than taking on Usain Bolt, 14 per cent of budding athletes reckon their best shot for success is to pick an obscure discipline, according to new research from Gumtree.

Shooting tops the list for Olympic dreamers, with archery and ping-pong in second and third place.

The classified ads website has also seen a 53 per cent increase in sporting posts since Beijing as Brits promote training sessions, sell equipment and search for team-mates.

Graham Morrison from the British Fencing Association echoes the findings, reporting a growth in the number of both recreational and competitive fencers.

He said: "Some fencing clubs now have waiting lists and many of the larger competitions have had to limit entry numbers.

“The London Olympics appear to be a strong motivator, especially for younger fencers, some of whom look in with a real chance of success in 2012.”
