HULL OF A CARVE-UP

Garreth Carvell asked to leave Hull yesterday – just 24 hours after a signing a new three-year contract.

GB Prop Carvell, 28, had committed himself to the Black and Whites until the end of 2011.

But the former Leeds front rower had a dramatic change of heart which will heap more pressure on coach Richard Agar.

It’s the latest upset for the Challenge Cup semi-finalists following the sacking of Agar’s predecessor Peter Sharp two months ago.

Hull were also found guilty of fielding an ineligible player – Jamie Thackray – in two previous rounds of the Cup.

St Helens have long been linked with Carvell andthey hope to announce one more major signing after recruiting Kiwi prop Tony Puletua.

But that might be a threequarter to replace centre Willie Talau, who is not expected to get a new deal.

Carvell’s likely destination is Wigan or Bradford.

Agar, who will still pick Carvell, said: “It is a massive disappointment. Hopefully we can find a solution to this situation but in the meantime I have no doubt Garreth will honour his existing contract to the best of his ability.”

Carvell said: “I would like to apologise to the supporters and reassure them I’ll give 100 per cent  every time I pull on the shirt.

“The contract signing and subsequent request to leave could have been handled better on my part and I didn’t want to let the coaching staff and players down.”

QueenslanD won their third consecutive State of Origin series by beating New South Wales
