FODEN'S THREAT TO RUN RIOT

ABOVE: Ben Foden intends to prove France were right to see him as England's dangerman
19th March 2010

By Pete Samson

BEN FODEN intends to prove France were right to see him as England’s dangerman before he’d even started a game.

France defence coach Dave Ellis said the barely-used reserve full-back was the mainthreat after a cameo against Ireland last month.

And Martin Johnson has now given in to the clamour to hand the Northampton ace a start ahead of Delon Armitage in Paris tomorrow.

And after a frustrating Six Nations that has seen him play less than an hour’s rugby, Foden (right) is ready to show what he can offer.

Foden, 24, said: “What Dave Ellis said shows that they’re worried about me and that they see me as a threat. I hope I don’t disappoint!

“I’ll try to take on players and create holes in their defences.

“I’m in the team for my running and my ability to counter- attack. I won’t shy away from that.”

Foden has been champing at the bit to make his first international start and vented his frustrations at being overlooked last autumn.

He described himself as ‘livid’ after not playing against Argentina, when wing Ugo Monye was picked at full-back ahead of him.

He was reprimanded by Johnson for that, and said: “I learned the hard way that if you have a problem with the coaching staff, you’re best off talking to them behind closed doors.

“The lesson’s been learned and hopefully I won’t make those mistakes again.”
