ASBESTOS: THE HIDDEN KILLER

ABOVE: Hidden killer
9th February 2010

By Daily Star Reporter

WORKERS in the building and maintenance sector face the highest risk of exposure to asbestos.

The health risks associated with asbestos have led to its removal from buildings. However, thousands of tonnes of it remain.

It endangers the lives of those employed to carry out renovations, refurbishments and repairs.

They include joiners, plumbers and electricians, who work closely with the building industry, as well as security and IT installation staff.

Since January 2009, asbestos awareness training has been a legal requirement for all employees who could be exposed to asbestos during their normal working day.

James Murphy, manager of Sheffield-based HS Direct, a provider of asbestos awareness courses, said: “It has raised awareness. Employers have no choice but to provide training, while workers are finding they can’t operate in their trade without it.”

The company runs short, three-hour courses at training centres in Sheffield and London, and provides on-site training for larger companies.

A short, multiple choice exam at the end of training ensures that people have a clear understanding of the risks and how to avoid them.

As well as complying with health and safety laws, companies that invest in asbestos awareness training could find there are business benefits.

David Wilson, from Bristol-based asbestos and training specialists Shield Environmental Services, said: “Being trained by a member of the UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) is essential when pitching for some business contracts.”

Mr Wilson added: “Asbestos is a major killer. Asbestos awareness training is not expensive, takes half a day and ultimately can save lives.”
