BT ‘RELAXED’ ON RIVALS

ABOVE: BT is prepared to open up its telegraph poles and underground ducts for its rivals
9th February 2010

By Daily Star Reporter

BT is prepared to open up its telegraph poles and underground ducts so rivals can install high-speed telecoms cables over existing infrastructure.

The move could allow BSkyB and Carphone Warehouse’s soon-to-be demerged TalkTalk to instal fibre-optic cable networks without having to dig up roads.

Last month the Tories said they would open up infrastructure for broadband in rural areas.

BT chief executive Ian Livingston said rivals could already instal their equipment into BT’s exchanges “so we’re relaxed about providing another form of access”.
