SHEER MERSEY MADNESS

ABOVE: Steven Pienaar should have been sent off for his high tackle on Javier Mascherano
8th February 2010

By Brian Woolnough

SUCH was the ferocity of the Merseyside derby, the bad tackles and the free-kicks given, that the ball was only in play for 19 minutes in the first half.

Surely referee Martin Atkinson should have sent off Steven Pienaar for his ghastly high tackle on Javier Mascherano? While Marouane Fellaini was guilty of another red card challenge on Kyrgiakos.

The game was X-rated all the way through and the referee lenient. Yet listen to Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard: “The referee was superb. He let tackles go. The fans come to see commitment and fight. There were some mistimed tackles but we are not complaining.

“We should enjoy this. This is what derby games are all about.”

So, there you are, what do I know?
