STAGS PAY PRICE AFTER BIG FREEZE

ABOVE: David Holdsworth slammed his Mansfield boys for letting down a huge Field Mill crowd
8th February 2010

By Graham Nickless

David Holdsworth slammed his Mansfield boys for letting down a bumper 7,261 Field Mill crowd as they lost 2-0 at home to Gateshead.

The Stags doubled their gate and the kick-off had to be delayed 20 minutes after fans were allowed to pay whatever entrance fee they liked.

However, debutant Brian Wake ruined the party when he scored twice to give lowly Gateshead their first win in seven games.

Holdsworth said: “Some of my players froze, but if they can’t deal with a 7,000 crowd, they shouldn’t be in football.”

Nervy Oxford reclaimed top spot from Stevenage, despite being held to a goalless draw by Kidderminster in front of a near-6,000 gate at the Kassam Stadium.

Tamworth chief Gary Mills hailed “the best team performance” of his 15-year managerial career after skipper Chris Smith’s goal beat nine-man Stevenage.

Borough had captain Ronnie Henry and midfielder Darren Murphy sent off.

AFC Wimbledon chief Terry Brown accused referee Warren Atkins of not protecting his team after Forest Green went down 2-0 to early strikes from Nathan Elder and Will Hendry.

He said: “We had players elbowed everywhere.”
