308 BETTER BY A SMILE

THIS new Peugeot 308CC, above, is so much better than the car it replaces you wonder how on Earth Peugeot will sell their remaining stock. Especially as it’s only an extra 600 quid.

It’s startlingly faster, more fuel-efficient and cheaper to tax. So get down to your Peugeot dealer now and nail the salesman to the floor by getting him to chuck in every extra in the book and slashing the price of the old version.

The reason for a raft of improvements is a different engine and gearbox. Peugeot’s latest 1.6-litre turbo, built with BMW, is such a gem it can’t be ignored.

Despite being the same size, power increases from 140 to 156bhp. Torque, or pulling power, leaps from 133 to 178lb/ft.

This results in top speed rising from 127 to 131mph and the 0-62mph (100kph) time plummeting from a horribly slow 12.4 secs to a quite lively 9.8 sec figure.

Meanwhile, the new auto gearbox, light years ahead of the the one it replaces, helps with emissions and fuel consumption.

Fitted with six gears, rather than the old car’s four, it’s lighter and smaller and provides what Peugeot call “stress-free driving”.

Fuel consumption improves from 34.8 to 36.6 mpg while emissions fall from 192 to 179g/km resulting in tax of £175 a year rather than £215.

Cost of the new car is £23,595. The old car costs whatever you beat them down to.
