IF you’ve read my piece on snakeskin alloys you’ll know exactly who should be buying one of these.
I WAS having a conversation with one of the presenters of Five’s Fifth Gear programme the other day and he asked: “What left-field car do you really rate?”

NEW MERCEDES E-CLASS ESTATE

ABOVE: New Mercedes E-Class Estate
5th February 2010

By George Fowler

IF I wasn’t the trendy, 20-something, slim and handsome young man that you know I am, this could well be my perfect car.

It’s the new Mercedes E-Class Estate, above, that has just gone on sale, and it’s brilliant.

Needless to say, as I’m also a multi-millionaire, I’d pick the mighty AMG version. I’d be more interested in its 0-62mph figure of 4.6 secs rather than an average 22mpg.

If, however, I’ve just been lying and I’m not quite that loaded, I’d probably go for the E220 CDI, which costs £30,395, averages 50mpg and costs £125 a year in tax thanks to CO2 emissions of 150g/km.

The range actually starts at £29,785 for a 2-litre petrol job that still averages 36mpg, but whichever car you choose you’ll still get a mass of superb equipment and a boot the size of a jumbo jet cargo hold.

It all sounds like a dream ...
