HOME SECRETARY ALAN JOHNSON UNDER FIRE FOR CRIME ANNOUNCEMENT

ABOVE: Home Secretary Alan Johnson last night came under fire for an announcement on crime and disorder
21st November 2009

By Richard Peppiatt

HOME Secretary Alan Johnson last night came under fire for a “wishy-washy” announcement on crime and disorder.

He was slammed for saying all victims should be visited by a police officer – but then claimed that it was just his “gut feeling”.

He said dedicated neighbourhood officers should be spending 80% of their time on the beat – despite a report last month by Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary finding 35 out of 43 police forces falling short of the standard.

He said there might be “practical” reasons why not everyone can be seen in person but his “gut reaction” was that a victim of crime should be seen.”

Mr Johnson added: “I think in general the principle and the sentiment is absolutely right.”

But his speech was blasted by Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling, who said Labour were “out of ideas and out of time”.

He said: “As Government announcements go, it doesn’t get more wishy-washy.”
