By Richard Ashmore

ICONIC children’s toy Barbie has been given a fundamental new look – wearing a burka.

The doll is going undercover for a charity auction.

Some 500 dark-skinned dolls wearing traditional Islamic dress are on show in Florence, Italy.

Makers Mattel are backing the exhibition which is the work of Italian designer Eliana Lorena.

Other outfits include the full-face niqab, a Japanese kimono and the Indian sari.

The auction, by London firm Sotheby’s, is part of Barbie’s 50th anniversary celebrations this year.

Proceeds will go to Save The Children.

The UK’s biggest Barbie fan Angela Ellis, 35, has a collection of more than 250 dolls.

The company director from Wirral, Cheshire, said: “I think that burka Barbie is a great idea.

“Girls should have the opportunity to play with a Barbie that they feel represents them.”

The doll was launched in 1959 by US businesswoman Ruth Handler. Barbie was joined by her long-term boyfriend Ken in 1961.
