I NEED to disappear.

I have to get away from my violent and abusive boyfriend. But how? 

My whole life is here. My parents, my work and my friends are all within a 10-minute walk of my flat. 

If I give up everything, then I’ll have to start again. I’ll be a single woman in a strange, new world and I don’t know if I can cope with that. 

My problem is my boyfriend. He is controlling, jealous, unpredictable and wants me all to himself. 

He hates me wearing fashionable clothes or going anywhere without him. He’s suspicious of my family and absolutely loathes my friends. 

If I don’t do as he says, then he slaps, kicks and bites me. 

He flies into the most terrible rages and then blames me for winding him up. 

I can’t do right for wrong. The tragedy is that he wasn’t always like this. When we first got together he was considerate and caring. 

He totally dedicated himself to me and I really felt that he was “on my side”. 

But late one night, after a party at my friend’s house, he went berserk. He accused me of having an affair with my friend’s brother. 

He said he’d watched us together and there was definitely something going on. 

When I tried to explain that I’d known this guy since I was five, he slapped me around the head and screamed: “Whore!” Then the punches, elbows and kicks rained down on me. 

I ended up with two broken ribs, a fractured finger and severe cuts and bruises all over my body. 

When I eventually came out of hospital, he said he was sorry but I had driven him to lash out. 

He hoped that we could try again and then insisted on having sex with me. The pain was excruciating, but I couldn’t say no. Things have gone from bad to worse. My life is a living hell and I’m frightened every day. 

He constantly tells me that I’m ugly, stupid and useless. Friends say I should dump him. But he’ll never let me have another boyfriend or leave me alone. 

JANE SAYS: You’ve got to get away. I’m afraid that there is no alternative. If you stick with your boyfriend then the chances are he’ll seriously injure or kill you. 

If you try to break up with him, and stay in your flat, then he’ll harass and haunt you forever. 

A clean break in a new place is your only chance. It’s been suggested that a woman in peril needs to move at least a hundred miles away, dump her mobile phone, avoid direct contact with her family and friends and stay away from her home town for at least a year. 

Extreme? Maybe, but what other options do you have? This man is violent and unpredictable and could easily kill you. 

Talk to your family and be honest about what you’re going through. Also call the National Domestic Violence Helpline (0808 200 0247) and Shelter’s housing advice helpline (0808 800 4444). 

At least two women are killed in the UK each week by current or former partners. Protect yourself before it’s too late.
