OLD MAC TO PRODUCE

ABOVE: Boherbradda Mac is fancied at Nottingham
19th October 2009

By Jim Austin

BOHERBRADDA MAC (9.40) can prove the decision to bring him out of retirement vindicated by landing the Smith Cooper Trophy final at Nottingham tonight.

He was considered one of the best sprinters before a seemingly-career ending injury at Sheffield, but the four-year-old has come back in really good shape to the extent that he’s on a hat-trick.

Fastest in last week’s heats, Harry Williams’ speedster is fancied to make that time superiority count.

Unfortunately that feature race appears too late in the meeting to be shown live in betting shops, but those punters can still enjoy some fine action, including two heats of the Brakes Foodservice Autumn Puppy Cup over 500m.

Romeo Active (8.19) may have been disappointing when fourth in last week’s Produce Stakes decider over C&D, but he showed in the preliminaries that he is an above-average youngster.

Taking a drop in class in the opening heat and plotted as the only wide seed in the field, it should be a case of normal winning service being resumed.

Sheffield’s Silver Collar winner Honey Trampas (8.36) is another with less on his plate and he can complete a trap six double by taking the second heat for in-form trainer Diane Henry.

The supporting one-off sprint should go the way of Judicial Ace (8.52). He has the best form both overall and recent, although trap one doesn’t have the best of records in Nottingham sprints and that tempers enthusiasm.

Romford features three heats of the Coral On TV Stayers with Droopys Carvalho (7.58) looking the one to beat not only in the second heat, but the competition as a whole.

John Mullins’ dog can disappoint on occasions, but when he’s good, he’s very good especially over the 575m trip at the Essex track and he should bounce back from one of those bad days at Monmore last time.

Franks Lad (7.27) didn’t get home over the St Leger trip at Wimbledon and should appreciate the drop in distance in heat one. Kennelmate White Blaze (8.31) is a tentative pick for a wide-open third.
