SHUT FRATTON PARK IF HARRY HATE MOB GETS OUT OF HAND

ABOVE: Redknapp won the FA cup last year with Portsmouth
17th October 2009
WOOLY'S WORLD

If HARRY REDKNAPP is abused by Portsmouth fans today they should close down Fratton Park. It’s a dump, anyway.

What is sport coming to if a manager can’t return to one of his old clubs without fear of being attacked?

Portsmouth fans have short memories. Redknapp is the most successful manager in their recent history, taking them to eighth in the Premier League and winning the FA Cup.

He was given the freedom of Portsmouth, although that doesn’t appear to mean anything to some Pompey morons.

Redknapp says he has no worries and certainly doesn’t want a personal bodyguard when he takes his Spurs side to Portsmouth today for the first time since quitting for White Hart Lane a year ago.

That is a good attitude. No doubt Harry will keep his dignity today.

We hope Portsmouth supporters see sense and treat him like a hero and not the enemy.

Portsmouth are in a mess, a calamity club. Where would they be today without Redknapp?

In 2003 he won the old Division One title, then kept them in the Premier League before quitting after a row with former owner Milan Mandaric. He angered Pompey fans by going to South Coast rivals Southampton but returned in December 2005.

The FA Cup was won in May 2008 before he got the biggest job of his life at Spurs. Managers change jobs, said Redknapp. It is a fact of life, he added. He’s right.

Portsmouth must live with the fact that Redknapp bettered himself after doing a great job for them.

They should roll out the red carpet, not wait in corners to rubbish his presence.

So we keep our fingers crossed there is not another ugly incident to add to this season of controversy.

Redknapp going home should be a celebration not a war. If the Portsmouth fans don’t see it that way, shame on them.

Football will be watching closely this afternoon.

The first person to throw abuse at Redknapp should be evicted and ordered never to return.

If it gets out of control then Portsmouth must be punished. That would mean ground closure.

It is about time football got tough with foul- mouthed yobs who call themselves supporters.
