ALBUM - THE SATURDAYS: WORDSHAKER

ABOVE: TOP CLASS: The girls’ voices have got bigger and better
12th October 2009

By Sarah-Louise James

THE Saturdays have big ambitions.

You can just imagine them in the planning meeting: "Girls Aloud have gone on hiatus/are getting on a bit; Sugababes might as well give up now; Dollyrockers: don’t even get us started."

And with the market just lapping up ladies with a great pop song right now, there’s no better time for this photogenic five-piece to make their mark.

Album two  - with its appealing, kinda leftfield title - is full of panoramic moody belters, tongue-in-cheek bubblegum pop tunes that make your toes twitch and raunchy R&B. All of which boast big-bucks, classy-assed production.

Here Standing sounds like the follow-up to David Guetta and Kelly Rowland’s When Love Takes Over, all plaintive piano and feisty gal lyrics; Ego sounds Rihanna-esque with a British edge and Open Up has an echo of the hyper pop-rush of Sugababes’ Push The Button.

The musical references are cool and the girls’ voices have got bigger and better – especially Uma and Rochelle’s. Although on Ego, the latter lady does sound a little too nasal.

It’s bursting with potential singles but if we had to pick two we’d go with the title song, which is feisty and funky and Lose Control which has radio hit written through it like a stick of seaside rock.

Forget Saturdays, you’ll be listening to this all week.
