CARRY ON, BRAVE SGT
YOU have to admire Staff Sergeant Kim Hughes for landing a direct hit on Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth.
The Minister met the straight-talking bomb disposal technician on his trip to Afghanistan to see British forces at work.
Mr Ainsworth probably thought he would jet into Helmand, heap some praise on Our Boys, then fly home again.
Wrong.
The defence chief, when introduced to Staff Sgt Hughes during a routine meet-and-greet, was directly challenged by him to send out more urgently needed troops.
Staff Sgt Hughes is brave enough to be out in Afghanistan risking life and limb for country.
But he’s even tougher for standing up to his boss and ramming home his wish list.
Mr Ainsworth is facing mounting pressure to bolster troop numbers and stem the surging death toll.
His commanders have told him, the retiring head of the British Army told him – and now even regular soldiers are facing up to him.
Mr Ainsworth seems to bounce from one embarrassing headline to the next.
Staff Sgt Hughes made a perfectly reasonable request to the Defence Secretary. We suspect that, rather than receive a carpeting from top brass, he will be quietly saluted for telling the boss how it is.
Come on, Bob.
Get more boots on the ground – and helicopters in the air while you’re at it...
And let’s get this war won so we can bring everyone home.
