SEXY MODEL GOES TOPLESS

ABOVE: The stunning open air version of the Audi R8
2nd October 2009

By George Fowler

EVER wondered what an Audi R8 would look like without a roof? Well here it is.

This stunning open-air version of the world’s best car – that’s the V10 engine R8 – is available to order in November at £111,995 for a six-speed manual or £117,155 for an automatic. Get your cash down early and it should be with you by March.

Thankfully, there are no plans for a cheaper V8 at the moment, which is a good thing as the V10 is such a vastly superior motor.

An all-electric fabric hood, aluminium construction and additional carbon fibre panels mean that Audi have managed to keep the car light, while still giving it the extra strength a car needs when it’s had its roof chopped off.

The cloth roof opens and closes in just 19 seconds and, for the ultimate pose, it works at speeds of up to 31mph.

It folds away in a Z shape into a storage compartment above the engine, while a heated glass window goes separately into the bulkhead.

Audi say that the roof is “fully compatible with high-speed driving” and add that even at “moderate speeds” interior noise levels are barely higher than the Coupé.

With 520bhp from its all-aluminium, hand-built V10, the R8 Spyder hits 0-62mph (100kph) in 4.1 seconds and 125mph in 12.7 seconds. Top speed is 194mph.

To top it all, its 19-inch, 10-spoke alloys get vented and drilled carbon fibre disc brakes with eight-piston callipers up front and four-piston callipers at the rear.

The best car in the world just got even better.
