HOT TROTT’S AN EARLY BLOEM-ER

ABOVE: Trott featured in a stand of 123 with skipper Strauss
7th November 2009

By Rodney White

JON TROTT put down a marker in his first game for England in his native South Africa.

The Warwickshire batsman is expected to come in for the sort of abuse Kevin Pietersen received when he went back for the first time.

But Trott, who made a hundred on his Test debut against the Aussies at The Oval, showed he is up for the fight with a fine 85 as England won their opening match of the tour against the Diamond Eagles in Bloemfontein.

He featured in a stand of 123 with skipper Andrew Strauss, who hit 72. The pair set about the bowling in a business-like fashion and took just 55 balls to mark their 50 partnership.

The England skipper brought up his own half-century from 62 balls and hit the first six of the innings before holing out on the deep square-leg boundary for 72.

But the Cape Town-born batsman looked set to mark his return with a ton until he surprisingly played on to Ryan Bailey for 85.

England then lost their way until Eoin Morgan added to his growing reputation with 67 not out in just 82 balls, helping the tourists to 294-7 in their 50 overs.

Stuart Broad set the tone for the home side’s innings with a wicket off the second ball, and from then on England were going to be the only winners.

The rest of the wickets were shared around, with Broad, Jimmy Anderson, Sajid Mahmood, Paul Collingwood and Graeme Swann picking up two apiece.

England bowled out the Eagles for 109 to wrap up a 185-run in what is the first of three warm-up games ahead of Friday’s opening Twenty20 international.
