GOODBYE TO FIDDLES

ABOVE: Sir Christopher Kelly
5th November 2009

By Tom Savage

GREEDY MPs were yesterday ordered to stop claiming mortgage payments and told their £65,000 “golden goodbye” payments must stop.

The official inquiry into expenses ruled they must hand back any profits from second homes.

It said MPs cannot flip houses to claim extra cash and should stop employing relatives.

Sir Christopher Kelly’s report came after months of revelations about the amounts MPs have been claiming. Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Conservative leader David Cameron said that the MPs should accept the findings.

Sir Christopher acknowledged his wide-ranging proposals would mean “substantial change” for MPs.

He said that, where necessary, they should be phased in with a suitable period of transition.
