DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: The Beatles Rockband - This one is gonna be a Starr
6th September 2009

By Paul Vale

THE Beatles, icons of the 60s, step into the very modern world of –gaming with the week’s big release, The Beatles – Rock Band.

The game was –unveiled at E3 during the summer, with Ringo and Paul in attendance to mutter platitudes before exiting stage left.

Still, the critical response was overwhelmingly positive, since when the game has taken up –column inches and airwaves across the media.

What makes Rock Band so –special is the music – but the money comes a very close –second.

I have no idea what this little enterprise cost makers Harmonix but it’s fair to say the Beatles’ back catalogue doesn’t come cheap.

There must have been some heavyweight negotiations going on –between the developer and –Apple Corp.

Rumours abound that the son of producer George Martin was brought in to help smooth the process, with George Harrison’s son, Dhani, also instrumental in getting the project off the ground.

It’s also important to remember that Beatles songs are still not available to download digitally.

The band’s back catalogue is heavily protected yet here we are with a game that overflows with hit after hit.

In terms of the gameplay, you can jam with up to six players, allowing full harmonies on the vocals. The rest remains the same with the usual raft of –difficulty levels.

Interestingly, downloadable content in the form of albums is scheduled for release in the run-up to Christmas.

First Abbey Road, followed by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and finally Rubber Soul.

There are several packages to choose from, stretched over the PS3, 360 and Wii.

These include premium –bundles boasting a guitar –(Macca’s bass), a drum kit, a –microphone and the game.

This will set you back around £180 online and there are also packages that include a replica of John’s guitar plus the game, and a replica of George’s guitar and the game, each priced around £80 online.

You can also just buy the game for around £40 online (£30 on the Wii).

Buying the kit is certainly an expense and I wouldn’t advise it unless this is your first foray into the Rock Band world (your current RB peripherals will work just as well).

Yet ten minutes with the game and whatever cash you’ve been forced to cough up will probably seem worth it.

The level of detail the developers have included is immense. This isn’t just Rock Band with flares and a funny wig.

The title, from the sleeve to the last line of code has been submerged, –Yellow Submarine-like, in the trappings of the Fab Four.

Each song benefits from –stunning background art, from the dingy stage of the Cavern Club to the psychedelia of –Magical Mystery Tour.

The costumes, mannerisms, instruments and most of all the music come together to create a tribute to four men who changed the course of pop history.
